Data Security and Protection Toolkit

DSPT or Data Security and Protect Toolkit is an annual online self-assessment of your organisations data and cyber security arrangements.

It demonstrates compliance with 10 data security standards and the Data  Protection Law but completing your DSPT does a lot more than that.

It is your gateway to the future.

“We feel that the DSPT is the foundation for a digital approach to social care service delivery. It helps our providers be on a level playing field with each other and can be referenced in any tender bid questions relating to data security and protection.

“The DSPT gives the council confidence that providers are clear on their understanding and responsibilities.” Tracy Leckenby, Durham County Council “CQC will increasingly expect a good provider to comply with the Data Security and Protection Toolkit or equivalent, as a minimum.

This also applies where you use a combination of digital and paper record systems.”

Mark Sutton, Chief Digital and Data Officer, Care Quality Commission

Don't miss the new FREE e-learning course to help you improve your staff's knowledge of data protection and cyber security!

  • This free e-learning course is for all staff working in adult social care services in England.
  • Care providers can use this course to improve and assess their staff’s knowledge of data protection and cyber security – including their individual responsibility to keep information safe. The course meets the training requirements within the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT).
  • This is the only free e-learning resource on this topic specifically designed for social care staff. The scenarios reflect situations that staff face within adult social care settings – including care homes, supported living, home care and community services. It covers all client groups, and all staff with access to personal data.

DSPT - Digital Security Protection Toolkit - your gateway to the future:

DSPT or Data Security and Protection Toolkit is an annual on line self-assessment of your organisation’s data and cyber security arrangements. Completing the DSPT demonstrate that your service is keeping data safe and handling data correctly, as well as to show you how to protect your business from serious risks like data breaches and cyber attacks.

DSPT shows compliance with 10 data security standards and the Data Protection Law. It covers both paper and digital records.

All CQC-registered care providers should complete the DSPT at least once a year.

The DSPT opens up opportunities for your service to:

  • share information digitally across health and care networks
  • be part of projects that allow care services to directly access NHS patient information systems, for example, GP records and shared care records
  • save you and your staff time and therefore improve the quality of care for the people you support.

Central and local government bodies, local authority, CCG commissioners, the Care Quality Commission and the National Data Guardian recognise The Toolkit as the official tool to evaluate care providers’ compliance with legal requirements, Data Security Standards and good practice.
